Urgent call for new volunteers

Is the future of our local playing field at the crossroads?

Yes, this does sound dramatic but the reality is that future of this much loved local community amenity is very uncertain.

What do you know about the playing field?

Opened in 1975 it has provided a space for walkers, informal recreation and both cricket and football pitches for competitive sport.  This provision has relied on the goodwill and commitment of a succession of volunteers.

What does it involve?

It requires local people to give of their time generously to maintain and improve the facility and raise much of the funding to pay for this.

 

Why is the future of the facility in doubt?

Worryingly the current committee numbers just three trustees and one committee member.  It is the case that also these volunteers undertake much of the fund-raising and maintenance and they’re not getting any younger!!  Two of the trustees are over 70 and one over 65 years of age.

What do we need?  WE NEED NEW VOLUNTEERS.

People of all ages, of both genders and those with disabilities would be welcome and no previous experience is required.

How can you help?

In addition to the specific roles – chairperson, treasurer and secretary, there are places for members to help with organising fund raising and events, – examples of such activities are the Firework and Bonfire Evening, Pop Up suppers, Race and Quiz nights.  Committee meetings annually total six and usually are held in the pavilion.

Other volunteers  Grass cutting, football pitch line-marking, cricket wicket maintenance, pavilion repair and upkeep, drainage ditch clearance – activities to name but a few! The first three tasks need to be carried out on a weekly basis and the others through maintenance/working party sessions on Saturday mornings – usually six annually.

Fireworks Postponed

Sadly we have decided that we can no longer go ahead with the planned fireworks display on Saturday due to the new national lockdown. Our hearty thanks to all those who have so generously donated to our Village organisations, all is not lost! We hope to reschedule the display for New Years Eve. We will keep you informed. In the meantime you can still donate, every penny raised will be shared amongst our Village organisations – The Village Hall, The Playing Field, The Horticultural Society, The Variety Club, The New Village Hall and The Church.

Fireworks and Fundraising!

We are delighted to announce that the Village Firework Display will go ahead on Saturday 7th November at 8.30 pm, weather permitting. Whilst we can’t hold a public event, as we simply wouldn’t be able to apply workable social distancing measures, there will be a firework display for us all to enjoy from the comfort of our own homes and gardens.

The fireworks have been bought and paid for by two major donors and other local individuals. As in previous years, this will be a fundraising event. Our aim is to use this opportunity to raise money for some of our local voluntary organisations whose events and income streams have been adversely affected by the pandemic. Neil Kempson

It is with extreme sadness that we report the passing of Neil Kempson yesterday.
Neil was a much loved member of the Hadlow Down community and will be sadly missed by all.  His association with the New Inn, St. Mark’s School, the Village Fayres and everything else ‘Hadlow Down’ made him a ‘special’ villager. We are sure that the thoughts of everyone who knew Neil will be with Di and all his family

Message to all dog owners

The Parish Council has received complaints about owners not picking up their dog’s faeces.  Despite the majority of people kindly clearing up after their dogs, there is a very small minority who are either leaving the offending item where it has been deposited or placing it in a bag and leaving it hanging in the hedgerow.  This is especially a problem in Wilderness Lane which makes it very unpleasant for residents and is a health hazard.

For those who leave the item on verges it can be a very unpleasant experience when the owner comes to cut back the vegetation.

Can owners please either place the dog’s faeces in the dog bins provided at the Village Hall and at the playing field or take it home with them.

VE Day 75 in pictures

“our streets are not empty, they are filled with the love and the care that we have for each other”.

Just before 11 am, on Friday 8th May at St.Marks Church,  Richard Boswell  stood in the church yard and played The Last Post  and the Reveille.

Keith Edwards fired a Maroon to mark the beginning and end of the two minute silence.

At approximately 11.05 am Richard began to play We’ll Meet Again… Anne and Chris Yarrow spontaneously started to dance. Thanks to Keith filming it we can join in too…

The Queen’s speech was perfect and poignant, in the broadcast, she said:

“Today it may seem hard that we cannot mark this special anniversary as we would wish.”

“Instead we remember from our homes and from our doorsteps.”

It aired exactly 75 years on from her father King George VI’s address at the end of the Second World War in Europe.

Thanking the wartime generation, the Queen, 94, said: “They risked all so our families and neighbourhoods could be safe.”

“We should and will remember them.”

This year’s celebration has been limited due to the lockdown conditions in place across Europe because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Despite this, the Queen said, “our streets are not empty, they are filled with the love and the care that we have for each other”.

“And when I look at our country today and see what we are willing to do to protect and support one another, I say with pride that we are still a nation those brave soldiers, sailors and airmen would recognise and admire.”

VE Day 75

I am afraid that the terrible Coronavirus emergency and consequent Government guidance means that we are unable to come together today. Our plans, here in the village, for  VE Day 75 community celebrations due to take place on the bank holiday weekend of 8th – 10th May are on ice. It is right and proper that people should be kept safe and healthy.

However, you could take part in celebrations safely from home. I am sure that many of you are planning to do just that. Please share your celebrations with us,

The BIG Hadlow Down Bonfire Night


Saturday November 2nd.

7:00 pm Gates open at the Playing Field.
7:30 pm Torchlight procession departs the New Inn. Goes via Hut Lane, Lake Boulevard and School Lane to the Playing Field.
7:45 pm Torches are cast to light the bonfire .
8:45 pm Massive firework display finale.
Bar and food available throughout the proceedings
